Alan Dichter and Vivian Orlen | Deborah Meier on Education:

Alan Dichter and Vivian Orlen

Dear readers,
I brought up in the previous post  the names of Alan Dichter and Vivian Orlen, I’m assuming too much!  They were both leaders of CES schools (Coalition of Essential Schools) in NYC for many years until they decided to move to Portland to try something different.  Vivian was principal of a fascinating large community school in Portland for 4-5 years.  I loved visiting it.  But they decided to return “home”.   Alan was also the source of another quote,  which we used for many years in building collaboration between CES schools in NYC.
“I’m not going to tell you what to do.  But it’s not none of my business”.
It was also the underlying spirit between colleagues in our schools–although we occasionally did collectively set some limits on what you do and combined frank

"Parents Can Only Listen" - MyEdNext:

I attended a conference call today initiated and led by Ben Austin, Executive Director of Parent Revolution, to honor "National Parents Day."  The call from start to finish focused on the complexity of the parent trigger law, the controversy, the process, and the status of California schoolsAlthough the call's password was "Parents," parents couldn't ask questions - only reporters could. Perhaps Parent Revolution should consider a name change or a re-branding.

I'm confused.

A few minutes into the call, a personable Ben Austin stated, "We've been outspent 100 to 1 by opponents of parent trigger."  Seriously?  Florida parents were opponents of parent trigger. I'm certain the money depleted from my personal savings account and those of the dynamo parents from Save Duval Schools and Fund Education Florida and other parents wouldn't total a fraction of what Parent Revolution spent. I would have asked him to elaborate on that point if parents were allowed to participate in Parent Revolution's National Parents Day conference call but, we weren't.

Austin later stated "opponents of Parent Revolution spent $8 billion." Wow! For those Florida parents who shared granola bars in the senate gallery vs. going out to lunch, that's hard to believe!  We spent our own savings on travel, child care, and shared hotel rooms. Whomever has that $8 billion might want to buy us lunch in Tallahassee next year.

Austin reflected, "I wish I had the army of lobbyists our opponents had." The Florida lobbyistdirectory shows that the California firm, Parent Revolution, has three lobbyists registered in Florida

From Tampa Bay Times reporter Alex Leary:
Sen. Marco Rubio has joined growing criticism of the education standards known as Common Core, putting him in conflict with Jeb Bushat a time when Rubio is sharpening his conservative credentials.
“Common Core started out as a well-intentioned effort to develop more rigorous curriculum standards,” Rubio said in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times. “However, it is increasingly being used by the Obama Administration to turn the Department of Education into what is effectively a national school board. This effort to coerce states into adhering to national curriculum standards is not the best way to help our children attain the best education. Empowering parents, local communities and the
