The University of California should move more quickly to sign a contract with its 6,000 or so postdoctoral researchers, an East Bay congressman told UC President Mark Yudof on Tuesday.
In a letter to Yudof, Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, said he was "thoroughly disappointed" at the lack of progress since the two sides started negotiating in February 2009. The letter followed an April 30 congressional hearing in Berkeley where researchers and the university explained the challenges that have prevented the contract from being finalized.
Among the issues that have yet to be resolved are wages and benefits. The delay appears to be due mostly to UC's reluctance to provide information, wrote Miller, chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee.
"[T]here appears to be no excuse for continued delay in bargaining," he wrote. "I believe it is your responsibility to
